Nabarro advises on Kent Building Schools for the Future programme

28 October 2008

Law firm Nabarro LLP has advised Kent County Council on one of the biggest and most complicated Building Schools for the Future (BSF) projects to date. Kent County Council has formed a local education partnership (LEP) joint venture with Land Securities Trillium (LST) to rebuild or refurbish over 30 secondary schools in the county. The project has an initial capital spend of some £500 million.

BSF is the government’s secondary schools renewal programme which aims to rebuild or renew every one of England’s 3,500 state secondary schools over a ten to fifteen year period. The programme is being rolled out in 15 planned waves, and this project is part of the third wave.

LST, which invests in and operates long term property partnerships, is working with a range of builders and with an ICT partner, Northgate Information Solutions, who will provide new school based devices and a managed IT service for five years from the date the last school's service is commenced, with the option to extend for a further five years.

Stephen Matthew, partner at Nabarro comments: “We were delighted to advise Kent County Council, on this BSF programme. It is a large and complex deal and the financial close has included the largest number of schools ever included in a BSF. This is the fourth BSF scheme closed by Nabarro and we are also advising six councils on BSF and working on the Kent Academies programme. The team has a depth of experience which enables us to advise on all elements of BSF programmes, including construction, PFI, banking and ICT.”

Nabarro has been working with Kent County Council since 2005 on the project and will continue to support them on the roll out of further projects with the LEP.
