Annual Nabarro EPRA event shows market optimism

11 February 2008

Law firm Nabarro’s annual event with the EPRA, held in London on 22nd January, was a huge success, attended by over 300 people.

This unprecedented number of people who attended was a sign of the general eagerness to gain any insight into where the markets are going.

The event was chaired by Nick Tyrrell of JP Morgan. Other speakers included, JP Morgan analyst Harm Meijer, UK retail and leisure property company Capital & Regional chairman Martin Barber, chief executive of SEGRO Ian Coull, managing director in the european real estate finance group of Barclays Capital Peter Denton.

Despite the uncertainty gripping the listed real estate industry amid the credit crunch and extreme volatility in financial markets, the general view was optimistic and a June recovery of the UK property market was predicted.

Nabarro real estate partner Christopher Luck, who opened the event, said:

“A year is a long time in the property sector, but just a day is a long time in the markets at the moment.”

The new EPRA Chief Executive Philip Charls also gave an update on EPRAs activities, he said:

“A key priority of EPRA will continue to be supporting the roll-out of REIT structures in those 12 markets among the 25 EU member states where they are not yet in place.”

Philip Charls outlined the initiatives EPRA will be engaging in this year ranging from cooperation with the European REIT coalition, to active lobbying alongside the global REESA alliance of real estate associations to influence the outcome of far-ranging proposed international accounting changes.
